# Name Dispute Policy
Last updated: April 26, 2026
This policy covers how we handle username, organisation, and module names on Protorip.
Names are first-come, first-served, and they're for genuine use. If a username or organisation name you want is taken, choose another one.
## Reserved Names
Some names aren't available for registration:
  • System-reserved names: `admin`, `api`, `help`, `legal`, `support`, and similar
  • Names beginning with `protorip-` or anything else we consider confusingly similar to our own brand
  • Other patterns we reserve as operational needs change
## Squatting
Squatting means holding a username or organisation you aren't using — empty, no activity, or claiming many at once to block others.
To judge whether a username or organisation is in genuine use, we may look for things like:
  • A published commit in the last 12 months
  • Active downloads and usage
  • Public evidence of ongoing development of the project
  • Reasonable preparation for an imminent project directly related to the name
Where we consider a name to be squatted, we may reclaim it. We'll do our best to contact the holder first and give them a reasonable window to respond.
## Trademarks
If you hold a registered trademark and need to raise a trademark-related issue about something on Protorip, email [disputes@protos.rip](mailto:disputes@protos.rip) and we'll look into it. We'll confirm we received your notice and tell you what action we took. Where it helps, we'll put you in touch with the current holder. We'll act where the law requires us to.
We don't adjudicate contested marks — where two parties both have plausible rights, your remedy is external (legal proceedings, trademark offices, alternative dispute resolution), and we'll typically maintain the status quo while that's sorted out.
